Risking life and limb for bragging rights and prize money: those were the crazy days of Adelaide’s ‘Birdman Rally ’, when Glenelg played host to some spectacular aviation antics. Up for grabs was the chance to win $10for making it metres. There’s been a couple of half-hearted attempts to get the Birdman Rally going again with former Glenelg Mayor Ken Rollond suggesting at one stage “If they can have a Birdman Rally in Melbourne (on the Yarra River as part of the Moomba Festival), I don’t see why we can’t have one here. The finished product - bloody excellent, fellas.

Kicking off at 11am on Sunday March, the hilariously spectacular Birdman Rally is a long-held Moomba tradition that is guaranteed to have you in stitches. These were the crazy days of the ‘Birdman Rally’, when Glenelg played host to spectacular aviation antics. Many of the crafts were specially built by the contestants and it was hilariously funny to see many epic failures. The winner of that first event was an experienced hang-glider pilot, Colin Clarke, who managed just 18m before plunging into the murky depths of the Torrens. The huge success of the day created a problem.

In the Summer months there were the Proclamation Day celebration (December), a Christmas Pageant and Carols by the Sea, and in January a regatta and the Birdman Rally. The shopping centre is in Jetty Roa along which the Glenelg tram runs.
