Croatian mentality

Today, it is a separate country. Local people, as a rule, react negatively if they are called Yugoslavs. After a highly successful career in business, Fogec still believes that the biggest problem in Croatia is the mentality of the Croats : the tendency to moan and the reluctance to actually work to change anything.

While the nature is definitely striking and beautiful, the nation is ridden with many very negative traits such as racism, nationalism, homophobia, violence and so forth. There’s much ‘backwards’ mentality that is preventing the croats from moving forwar and I could go on and on and on about it. Meeting a Croatian guy often means you´ve hit the jackpot, but sometimes, well, there´s plenty more fish. I often think about how fortunate I was to grow up with Croatian parents.

Even though I was born in Australia, everything about my essence, personality, identity, and upbringing was and is Croatian. Oh, the amount of ink spilled on this last topic! You are Afraid of Propuh.

The word propuh is not tied to nice things in Croatian mind. According to the Croatian Association of Prisoners in Serbian Concentration Camps, a total of 0Croatian civilians and Prisoners of war (a large number after the fall of Vukovar) went through Serb prison camps such as Sremska Mitrovica camp, Stajićevo camp, Niš camp and many others where many were heavily abused and tortured. But I fear genuine justice has not been served as there have been, and there still exist, international covert and overt moves to equate victims with aggressors continue in attempts to change history. At the start of the recession for example, they really did not seen to worry at all, having seen hard times before etc. The people of Croatia have throughout history often been ruled by different empires and foreign rulers, leaving traces of their own cultures, habits and language.

All of this has made the people of Croatia extremely diverse and different even among themselves. We are a mixed bag of different cultural influence, mentalities and habits. Is a foreigner allowed to have an opinion in Croatia ? I may as well say it publicly, as their men in dark suits and expensive surveillance equipment were listening to every word.

Croatian people invest most of their time and emotion into the inner circle.

They make close friends early on in life and stick to their tribe. It’s warm and fuzzy inside because Croats walk an extra mile for their close friends.
